Vetiver Grass: A Natural Solution for Erosion Control & Sustainable Coffee Farming in Vietnam

Wednesday - 11/06/2025 08:00
Vetiver grass plays a crucial role in preventing soil erosion and improving soil health for sustainable coffee farming in Vietnam. Through RECOFTC’s initiative, farmers are integrating Vetiver to enhance biodiversity, protect their land, and build climate-resilient farms. HuyEco supports long-term sustainability by engaging with farmers and promoting eco-conscious coffee cultivation.

Sustainable Coffee Farming in Đưng K'Nớ: A Field Experience with Vetiver Grass & Local Farmers

1. Introduction: Exploring Sustainable Coffee Farming in Vietnam

At HuyEco, we believe in a future where coffee farming and environmental conservation go hand in hand. As part of our commitment to local sustainability, we recently joined RECOFTC and Vietnam’s top Vetiver grass specialists on a field trip to Đưng K'Nớ, Lạc Dương, Lâm Đồng—a stunning coffee-growing region at 1,600m elevation known for its high-quality beans and cool climate.

Despite its ideal altitude and climate, traditional farming methods have led to low yields, soil erosion, and long-term sustainability challenges. Steep slopes, limited fertilization, and a history of herbicide use have weakened the soil structure, making coffee production increasingly difficult. Our mission was to help farmers implement Vetiver-based solutions, ensuring stronger soil health, better water retention, and enhanced biodiversity in coffee farms.

Under the rain, farmers work diligently to plant Vetiver grass along the steep slopes—an essential step in preventing soil erosion and securing the future of sustainable coffee farming.

🌳 About RECOFTC

RECOFTC (The Center for People and Forests) is an international nonprofit organization established in 1987. It works across the Asia–Pacific region to empower local communities in sustainable forest management, landscape restoration, and climate change adaptation.

In Vietnam, RECOFTC collaborates closely with government agencies, civil society, and farming communities to strengthen forest governance, secure land and resource rights, and improve rural livelihoods. Their long-term, inclusive approach helps build climate resilience and promote social equity in forested landscapes.

2. The Role of Vetiver Grass in Soil Conservation

To support farmers, RECOFTC donated 5,000 Vetiver plants—a vital tool for erosion control and land restoration. Vetiver grass is renowned for its deep, fibrous root system, which offers:

Soil Stabilization – Preventing erosion by binding the soil together.
Water Retention – Improving moisture levels, essential for coffee farms.
Nutrient Cycling – Enhancing soil fertility by increasing organic matter.
Reduced Chemical Dependency – Minimizing the need for synthetic fertilizers and herbicides.

Given the continuous rainfall throughout the day, planting conditions were optimal, allowing farmers to immediately integrate Vetiver into their cultivation systems.

3. Challenges & Solutions in Đưng K'Nớ’s Coffee Farms

During the field survey, I observed that soil profiles in this region reveal significant degradation—thin topsoil layers, aluminum-rich subsoils, and signs of acidity-related stress due to past herbicide use. The steep terrain further complicates traditional farming, making erosion management a priority.

To maximize Vetiver’s effectiveness, we trained farmers to:
Dig trenches for optimal water absorption.
Plant Vetiver in dense clusters (10cm apart) to form a natural barrier against erosion.
Use Vetiver as a foundation for multi-crop farming, integrating other trees for added biodiversity.

HuyEco’s approach focuses on restoring soil health and promoting natural farming ecosystems, ensuring that coffee farms remain fertile, resilient, and productive for generations to come.

4. The Future of Sustainable Coffee Farming in Đưng K'Nớ

While soil restoration is a critical first step, sustainable coffee farming requires ongoing support and education. We noticed that cultivation techniques, farm management, and post-harvest processing remain areas for improvement.

As part of HuyEco’s long-term vision, we will:
Continue surveying local farms to identify key sustainability opportunities.
Collaborate with farmers to develop efficient organic fertilization methods.
Provide ongoing training in sustainable coffee processing techniques.

Our commitment to biodiversity conservation, regenerative farming, and farmer education ensures that HuyEco leads the way in sustainable coffee production and eco-tourism.
