🌿 Rootstock & Resilience: A Farmer’s Quiet Revolution in Vietnam’s Coffee Highlands

A Half-Day Tour That Went Deeper Than Coffee

In the middle of July, as the sun filtered through the canopy of shade trees, our HuyEco half-day tour brought us to a Robusta coffee farm nestled in the Da Lat highlands. But this wasn’t just a visit—it was a window into the future of sustainable farming, climate adaptation, and quiet determination.

Where expertise meets origin – a moment of shared curiosity.
This photo captures a special moment during our HuyEco half-day tour with two guests from Japan. One of them, a certified Arabica coffee expert with an SCA credential, joined not just to taste—but to understand. At HuyEco, she traced the journey of coffee from soil to cup, connecting her daily sensory work with the roots of cultivation, climate, and community. It was a beautiful exchange between technical knowledge and lived experience—between the science of flavor and the soul of farming

Planting for the Future: Why Liberica?

As we walked through the nursery, we noticed something unusual: rows of Liberica coffee seedlings. Curious, we asked the farmer why he was growing this lesser-known variety—especially when it sells for less and is often considered inferior in flavor.

He smiled and explained:

“Liberica has deep, strong roots. It survives drought better. I graft Robusta onto Liberica rootstock to create a tree that’s both climate-resilient and high in cup quality.”

This technique—grafting Robusta scions onto Liberica rootstock—is a local innovation born from necessity. It’s a way to protect yields, preserve flavor, and adapt to the unpredictable rhythms of climate change.

This photo captures a quiet yet powerful moment at a HuyEco farmer’s nursery in Da Lat, where rows of Liberica coffee seedlings are being nurtured. Though less known for flavor, Liberica’s deep, drought-resistant roots make it ideal for climate adaptation. At HuyEco, farmers graft Robusta scions onto Liberica rootstock—creating trees that combine strength below ground with quality above. This nursery is more than a place for plants—it’s a living response to climate change, and a symbol of how local farmers are innovating from the ground up.

A Garden of Diversity

As we explored further, the farmer shared his planting techniques and the diverse crops in his garden. It wasn’t just coffee—there were pineapples, avocados, shade trees, and native plants. Everything had a role: improving soil health, attracting pollinators, or feeding his family.

I bought several pineapples and avocados to bring back to our HuyEco café in Da Lat. It’s part of our mission: connecting sustainably grown produce with conscious consumers.

In this video, a HuyEco farmer in Da Lat shares his technique for grafting a mature 40-year-old Liberica coffee tree with a Robusta scion. The goal: to create a hybrid tree that inherits Liberica’s deep, drought-resistant roots and Robusta’s superior cup quality. This method is part of HuyEco’s climate adaptation strategy—preserving tradition while innovating for resilience. A rare glimpse into the hands-on wisdom behind every sustainable cup.

A Conversation Under the Trees

At the end of the tour, we sat beneath the shade of a jackfruit tree, sharing slices of fresh pineapple from his garden. The farmer opened up about his dreams—and his burdens.

“I want to regenerate the forest that once stood here. This land belonged to my father. Now I carry the responsibility—not just for my family, but for the land itself.”

It was a moment of quiet honesty. A reminder that behind every cup of coffee is a person, a family, and a story of resilience.

In this video, a HuyEco farmer shares his personal reasons for embracing sustainable coffee cultivation. From honoring his father’s land to protecting future harvests from climate change, his story reveals the heart behind regenerative farming. It’s not just about better coffee—it’s about responsibility, resilience, and respect for the land

This coffee tree in a HuyEco agroforestry garden is flowering unexpectedly, months ahead of the usual season. The reason? A thriving forest-like system that maintains steady moisture through diverse shade trees and ground cover. Unlike monoculture farms, this regenerative approach creates a microclimate where plants follow nature’s rhythm—not the calendar. A quiet reminder that when we farm with the forest, the forest gives back.

A Glimpse Behind the Fabric

Before heading back, we made one final stop: a traditional silk weaving workshop. There, we learned how silk is made—from silkworm to loom—and reflected on the hidden labor behind the clothes we wear.
