A Half-Day Tour That Went Deeper Than Coffee

In the middle of July, as the sun filtered through the canopy of shade trees, our HuyEco half-day tour brought us to a Robusta coffee farm nestled in the Da Lat highlands. But this wasn’t just a visit—it was a window into the future of sustainable farming, climate adaptation, and quiet determination.

Planting for the Future: Why Liberica?

As we walked through the nursery, we noticed something unusual: rows of Liberica coffee seedlings. Curious, we asked the farmer why he was growing this lesser-known variety—especially when it sells for less and is often considered inferior in flavor.

He smiled and explained:

“Liberica has deep, strong roots. It survives drought better. I graft Robusta onto Liberica rootstock to create a tree that’s both climate-resilient and high in cup quality.”

This technique—grafting Robusta scions onto Liberica rootstock—is a local innovation born from necessity. It’s a way to protect yields, preserve flavor, and adapt to the unpredictable rhythms of climate change.

I bought several pineapples and avocados to bring back to our HuyEco café in Da Lat. It’s part of our mission: connecting sustainably grown produce with conscious consumers.

“I want to regenerate the forest that once stood here. This land belonged to my father. Now I carry the responsibility—not just for my family, but for the land itself.”

It was a moment of quiet honesty. A reminder that behind every cup of coffee is a person, a family, and a story of resilience.

Before heading back, we made one final stop: a traditional silk weaving workshop. There, we learned how silk is made—from silkworm to loom—and reflected on the hidden labor behind the clothes we wear.
